Sofía Vergara may hit back with a quick-witted response, but the actor likes to stick to the script on the job. Adam Devine reflected on joining the Modern Family cast during season 5 and revealed that he “confused” her when he improvised lines during a shared scene.
Adam, 40, told People on Wednesday, October 9, that he was approached by Modern Family cocreator and coproducer Steve Levitan to join the show. “He was like, ‘We want you to be the breath of fresh air. You’re coming in season 5. Maybe you can improv a little and keep people on their toes,'” Adam recalled to the outlet.
However, that wasn’t the case once it came time for Adam to film his first scene with Sofía.
“I remember she just had a blank [expression] and looked over to the producer village where all the producers sit, and she just goes, ‘What?’” the Workaholics star told the outlet. “She was so confused by what the hell I was doing because it wasn’t part of the script.”
After the director cut the scene, Adam claimed that Steve approached him and retracted his support of adding improv to the show and told him to “stick to the script.”
That said, Adam respects sitcom acting and “how it’s kind of a different beast and super fun to do.”
Closer got the inside scoop on the status of the Modern Family cast’s relationships after the 11-season series ended in 2020. According to an exclusive source, Sofía’s “not exactly doing anything to help” Julie Bowen land a major “post-Modern [Family] moment.”
“It’s definitely been frustrating for Julie to see Sofía put her keen instincts to work in the years since Modern Family ended,” the insider revealed in August. “Julie has never been able to generate that same kind of heat for herself, because it’s hard for her to think years and years in advance the way Sofía can.”
Sofía had her next big gig lined up shortly after taking her final bow as Gloria Delgado-Pritchett. In 2020, the A-lister snagged a seat on the judging panel for America’s Got Talent season 15. In addition to still being a judge on the NBC reality talent competition, Sofia landed the role as former Colombian queenpin Griselda in the 2024 Netflix series.
The entertainer made history at the 2024 Emmys by becoming the first Latina to be nominated for outstanding lead actress in a limited or anthology series or movie, for her role as Griselda.
“Wow. Griselda was my first dramatic role ever, and it took us 15 years to bring her to life,” Sofía told E! News in July, following her fifth Emmy nomination. “I’m incredibly grateful to everyone who was a part of this series. I could have never done this without my director Andres Baiz, my costar Alberto Guerra, Eric Newman and the full creative team, my partner and producer Luis Balaguer, Ted Sarandos, Bela Bajaria, and their team at Netflix, and all the amazing cast and crew. I never dreamed that after Modern Family I would be able to work on something as special as Griselda.”
